Volvo Cars has launched long-range plug-in-hybrid versions of its two flagship SUVs, claiming all-electric range capabilities up to two-and-a-half times greater than existing PHEVs.
The models are targeting the U.S. and European markets with claimed electric ranges, on the European WLTP rating, of up to 200 km (124 miles) on a charge for the brand’s best-selling XC60 midsize SUV and 160 km (99 miles) for the range-topping XC90 SUV, the automaker said in its Sept. 15 release.
The range boost comes thanks a larger-capacity, floor-mounted battery. These PHEVs also get a more powerful electric motor.
Volvo Cars added that it believes these long-range PHEV models will be a key part of a customer bridge to a fully electric future.
“Now, as long-range plug-in hybrids, they build on those legacies and, together with the all-electric EX60, give us our strongest-ever electrified offering in the mid-size SUV segment,” said Volvo Cars President and CEO Håkan Samuelsson.
The XC60 model also gets a facelift including matrix LED headlights, an upgraded grille and a redesigned front bumper, hood, and fenders, with new wheels, and a redesign in back including LED lamps and a new bumper.
Inside, there’s a new dashboard and door panel design, wood decor and Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather plus Volvo latest safety technology.
Changes for the XC90 include availability of the optional Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system.
Orders for the new PHEV models are being taken now in selected markets, with production scheduled to begin later this fall.
