Volvo Cars has announced the first models of its EX60 all-electric midsize SUV have begun rolling off the production line in Sweden.
The model, much trumpeted by Volvo as a game-changer and boasting a range to rival its hybrid XC60 sibling, will be ready for global deliveries beginning in early summer, the company said in an April 22 release.
These models are now being built at the automaker’s Torslanda plant outside its headquarters in Gothenburg and are the first of the brand’s EVs to be designed, developed and built in Sweden.
Volvo has already announced it is increasing its EX60 production volumes for 2026 thanks to strong demand from consumers, especially in its key markets of Sweden and Germany.
This move will see the Torslanda plant kept open for an extra week over summer to meet greater-than-expected European demand, with order books also open for the U.S. and Asian markets later this spring, the company said in its release.
The plant has been upgraded to include mega-casting production capabilities and a new battery assembly plant, as well as a refurbished paint shop and final assembly.
“Today is an important milestone for our company and for Sweden as a whole, as we start to build the first EX60 customer cars,” said Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson. “We are now focused on a steady ramp-up of high-quality EX60 production, making sure this game-changing car will be a profitable growth driver in the coming years,” he added.
