Porsche has taken quite a leap into the hybrid powertrain fold. With a major update to the newest-generation 911, dubbed the 992.2 within the company, it’s utilized electric motor propulsion assistance for the first time in the iconic sports car.
Efficiency is beside the point. Hybridization is here not just to fill any performance gaps left by internal combustion but to add a little extra oomph on top for good measure. The result not only makes for one lightning-quick Carrera GTS, but also a 2026 Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems winner.
“In a world filled with soulless hybrids and EVs, the new 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid combines a 532-hp boxer flat six with advanced hybridization to create a wonderfully nostalgic, high-performance aural driving experience that will put a smile on the face of all hard-core Porsche fans,” said juror Drew Winter.
Flat-6 foundation
Starting with a turbocharged 3.6-liter horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine. Porsche uses an oversquare 97-mm bore and 81-mm stroke, to aid in easy revving. In fact, you get a lovely 7,500-rpm redline. From there, this flat-6 gets a high-for-a-turbocharged-engine 10.5:1 compression ratio to make good power. Indeed, when the direct fuel injection squirts enough fuel, it delivers 478 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque.
Of course, the turbocharger plays a significant role in developing that power. And that turbo gets help from electricity. Porsche placed an electric motor between the compressor wheel and turbine wheel. It spins the turbo quickly to develop boost, especially at lower rpm, mitigating lag. Clever!
And that’s only half the fun. The same motor also functions as a generator. Off throttle, as the turbocharger spins down, it drives the motor and develops up to 11 kW of battery charging power. This function replaces the wastegate. After all, no need for a wastegate, when you minimize the waste. Utilizing available energy in such a thoughtful way impressed all of our judges.
The new flat-6 also goes without a belt drive, as items like the compressor for air conditioning get power electrically. That makes the engine more compact and leaves room to mount the pulse inverter and DC-DC converter above it. And those items help power yet another electric motor.

Complementary strengths
Porsche Integrated a permanently excited synchronous motor into the eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. It develops as much as 110 lb-ft of torque and 54 horsepower. That motor pulls energy from a 1.9 kWh, 400-volt battery pack, mounted under the hood up front. The 12-volt accessory battery has been downsized to lithium-ion and now lives in back.
Altogether, you get 532 horsepower and 449 lb-ft to play with from this 3.6-liter hybrid. And you feel that power from idle through redline.
"While one would expect performance from a Porsche 911, this execution shatters those expectations with performance turned up to 11," stated juror Gary Vasilash.
“Turned to 11” translates to 0-60 mph in a scant 2.9 seconds, traveling a quarter-mile in just 11.0 seconds, and, if you keep your right foot pegged to the firewall, reaching a top speed of 194 mph. Even with all the added electric motors and battery, the Carrera GTS T-Hybrid tips the scales at just 3,536 pounds, according to Porsche, giving the driver a weight-to-power ratio of 6.6 pounds per hp. Incredible.
To add an audio exclamation-point to the whole affair, the T-Hybrid includes a throaty sport exhaust system as standard equipment.

Performance-enhancing hybrid
Speaking of standard equipment, the T-Hybrid also comes standard with launch control. It’s the system that allows those aforementioned neck straining 0-60 mph runs. Launch control activates if you have the drive mode dial in Sport Plus, come to a stop, firmly place your left foot on the brake, and then your right on the throttle.
If you want maximum excitement and are already on the move, simply hit the red “Sport Response” button in the center of the drive mode dial on the steering wheel. Pressing it results in instant exhilarating performance.

Juror Bob Gritzinger summed it up best, "What a glorious machine. Whether it's at low speed, mid speed or high speed, this car is built for speed. And the topper is the red button on the steering wheel that gives you an extra 20 seconds of sport response."
Front-to-back, top-to-bottom, the 911 T-Hybrid puts performance first and in a way that keeps the driver confident in using it. And, in doing so, Porsche expands the idea of what “going hybrid” means. In short, it’s brilliant.
