“Dazzling” sums up in a single word the extraordinary cabin of the Volkswagen Tiguan that delights at first glance and doesn’t disappoint with time.
The compact SUV, with its stunning accent lighting, sweeping infotainment screens and driver-oriented design touches, won over our judges almost from the second they stepped onto the decorative VW-branded puddle lamp and pulled open the door — earning the Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line a spot on the 2026 Wards 10 Best Interiors & UX winners list.
“Wow!” judge Drew Winter proclaimed on his scoresheet, pointing out that, stickering at $45,410 fully loaded, the SEL R-Line we sampled seems like a steal. “Considering the average new car costs $50,000, our Tiguan tester is loaded with features we find only on much more expensive vehicles.”
To start, there’s the cabin’s general aesthetic: a sport-infused design that features stainless-steel-capped pedals; racing-inspired, heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel; aggressively bolstered seats and a cockpit-like layout that embraces the driver. The amber-brown leather interior splashes color beyond the quilt-patterned and perforated seats to the doors and dash to provide a finishing punch.
The Tiguan’s accent lighting goes well beyond anything we’ve seen at this price point. At night, the interior is bathed in one of 30 colors of your choosing, reflecting generously off door inners, seating surfaces and filtering through cleverly designed trim panels along the dash and doors that lend the vehicle its high-tech ambience.
There’s also a clever menu of “Atmosphere” interior settings — Joy, Nature, Energetic, Minimal and Lounge — that adjust the lighting as well as the sound from the excellent 700-watt, 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system to more precisely reflect your mood. You can even create your own custom atmosphere.

“Kind of cool,” noted 10 Best judge Bob Gritzinger. “And very on brand for the company that brought back the bud vase in the Beetle.”
Touches of brightwork along the steering wheel and uncluttered dash, American walnut wood accent trim and decorative double stitching along the leatherette surfaces add a touch of luxury to the Tiguan’s cabin.
The infotainment system features an extra-large, horizontally positioned tablet that’s perched atop a fold at the middle of the tri-layered dashboard and angled smartly to the driver. It is easily navigated; connectivity is quick and intuitive. And its graphics are big, cleanly drawn and colorful.

There’s zero latency when making selections through the 15-inch touchscreen. There are also quick access buttons that let you easily manage frequently required functions such as the climate system, heated seats, embedded navigation map and more. Additional controls on the leatherette-wrapped steering wheel are logically organized and a breeze to operate. Moreover — to the delight of our judges — there is a big, knurled, volume-control knob on the center console that’s impossible to miss.
The full-color 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro configurable gauge cluster completes the infotainment suite. It allows for four different views — including full-screen navigation. There’s also a head-up display that’s standard on the R-Line model.
Similar to the Atmosphere function, VW gets clever with its climate controls, offering selections such as “Warm Feet” or “Cool Feet” that help guide occupants to their precise comfort settings.
The sporty front seats are exactly what you would expect in a performance-tuned model, and a lumbar adjustment adds to the comfort. The rear bench provides ample legroom, includes headrests for all three occupants and is heated at the outboard positions — another surprise at this price point. The 60/40 rear-seat split allows for flexible cargo-carrying ability and expands capacity to an impressive 69.8 cubic feet when folded flat.
The R-Line Tiguan comes well-equipped with safety features, including VW’s Intelligent Crash Response system, post-collision automatic braking, dynamic road-sign display, pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, rear-traffic alert and parking assist. We found its hands-on, stop-and-go IQ.DRIVE system kept the vehicle well centered in the lane. It assists in lane changes as well.
Add it all up and the Tiguan delivers style, functionality and features in a way few others in the compact-SUV sector have managed.
“When it comes to interiors, the compact-SUV market is flooded with plain-vanilla vehicles,” summed up judge Gary Vasilash. “For the Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo, VW designers have executed a colorful, high-quality and high-functioning package that stands out from the proverbial sea of sameness.”
