Jaguar has added a ‘1’ to its Type 00 concept electric four-door grand tourer, emphasizing that it will be the first in a new generation of models for the British brand.
The automaker said Type 01, as an electric vehicle, uses the ‘0’ representing zero tailpipe emissions and the ‘1’ to indicate that it is the first in this new family of autos, the company said in a May 13 release.
Its new name will appear on the strikethrough label where the hood meets the windscreen of the luxury GT model, which uses Jaguar’s Tri‑motor EV technology delivering more than 985 horsepower and over 1,300 Nm of torque.
The use of ‘Type’ branding for the brand harks back to the Le Mans race‑winning C‑type of 1951, leading to the D-Type racer and then the E-Type road model before the last internal-combustion-engine-powered Jaguar F-Type 75, which ended production in 2024.
However, development of the brand’s first EV has been dogged by issues and, not least, a cool reception by Jaguar’s traditional fan base.
The issues have ranged from its first marketing campaign that had a diversity lifestyle focus, to delays in BEV product development or the eventual parting of ways for the car’s lead designer, Gerry McGovern. A devastating cyberattack that halted all production at Jaguar Land Rover also caused issues for the company, which is trying to turn the tide.
“We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before,” said Jaguar’s managing director, Rawdon Glover. “Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance,” he added. Jaguar Type 01 is to be revealed later this year.
