Long-time champion of hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles, Hyundai unveils its new Nexo midsize SUV targeting a 435-mile (700-km) range.
This second-generation Nexo build on the automaker’s 27 years of fuel-cell development and illustrates its commitment to a diversified electrification strategy.
It claims a completely revised FCEV propulsion system with a total output of 190-kW (255-hp), including a new, 150-kW (201-hp) motor backed by twice the battery pack output at 80 kW. Together, this gives the Nexo a claimed 0-to-62-mph (100-km/h) time of 7.8 seconds, nearly 1.5 seconds quicker than the previous model.
Its fuel cell stack’s maximum gross power improves by 16% to 110 kW and also features improved low-temperature operability and durability enhancements, including to the membrane, and a uniform cell performance structure. A “Wake Up” stack anti-freezing function and other system optimizations enhance low-temperature drivability and ease of starting year-round.
The car also gets a larger, 6.69 kg (14.71 lb.) hydrogen storage capacity, up from 6.33 kg (13.92 lb.) along with increased hydrogen storage density.
Aerodynamic improvements, including underbody optimizations and airflow management enhancements, reduce drag and improve efficiency.
European-specification models offer towing capability of up to 1,000 kg (2,200 lb.).
This new model uses an automatically adjusting regenerative braking based on navigation data and distance to vehicles ahead. The system uses extended map information to adapt to road conditions, such as speed cameras, turns and speed bumps. It reduces driver intervention by automatically managing deceleration during coasting, with adjustable vehicle distance settings.
Hyundai also used the Seoul Mobility Show 2025 to unveil two versions of its facelifted battery-electric Ioniq 6 and sports-focused Ioniq 6 N Line planned for launch in July.
The models draw their sleek aggressive design cues from the automaker’s RN22e Rolling Lab with sculptural bumpers and a wide street stance.
Interior enhancements provide a more comfortable, intuitive experience, with a redesigned steering wheel and upgraded materials along with a refined center console and enlarged climate control display.
