Nearly every major automaker reported sales increases in the third quarter compared to the same period a year ago.
General Motors and Ford reported strong electric vehicle sales, with GM crediting a rush of buyers taking advantage of an expiring federal tax credit for EV purchases. The tax credit expired Sept. 30.
Meanwhile, the auto industry continues adjusting to U.S. tariff policy and global trade wars.
Audi of America sales flat in Q3
Audi of America sold 46,758 vehicles in Q3, almost unchanged year over year.
The A4 and A6 sedans showed significant drops year over year, falling 100% and 41% respectively.
However, sales for the new Q6 e-tron SUV soared to more than 10,000 units in Q3.
BMW sales increase by more than 8%
BMW of North America sold 275,385 vehicles in Q3, an 8.5% year-over-year increase.
Sales of passenger cars totaled 42,035 units, up 19.1% YoY, while, sales of light trucks increased 28.1% to 54,851 units.
At the same time, automaker reported quarterly sales of electric vehicles fell 2.8% to 16,096 units.
“BMW customers remain enthusiastic about our product portfolio and the diversity of our drivetrain offerings,” said Sebastian Mackensen, president and CEO of BMW of North America, in a statement. “Together with our dealer partners, we head into the final stretch of 2025 well positioned to surpass last year’s record total for BMW sales in the U.S.”
Ford sales up over 8%
Ford Motor Co. sold 545,522 vehicles in Q3, up 8.2% year over year.
The automaker reported that Q3 was its best quarter ever for electrified vehicle sales, with 85,789 units sold, including EVs and hybrids.
Among the company’s trucks, its F-Series sold 207,732 units, up 4.7% YoY, while the Maverick set a Q3 record with 34,848 units sold.
“This quarter's growth showcases our portfolio's unmatched flexibility and breadth,” Andrew Frick, president of Ford Blue and Model e, said in a statement.
GM quarterly sales rise 8%
General Motors sold 710,347 vehicles in Q3, an 8% year-over-year increase.
The automaker set an electric vehicle sales record in Q3 with 66,501 deliveries, crediting the spike to buyers taking advantage of a federal tax credit for EV purchases that expired Sept. 30. GM reported strong sales for its EV Chevrolet Equinox and Lyriq, Optiq and Vistiq models from Cadillac.
“No one is in a stronger position for a changing U.S. market than GM,” Duncan Aldred, SVP and president of North America, said in a statement. “We have the best lineup of ICE and EV vehicles we’ve ever had. Our brands have grown market share with consistently strong pricing, and low incentives and inventory.”
Lucid delivered more than 4K vehicles in Q3
Lucid Group delivered 4,078 vehicles in Q3, up 46.6% compared to 2,781 deliveries in the same period last year.
The electric vehicle maker said it has delivered 10,496 vehicles globally between January and September.
Nissan U.S. quarterly sales up more than 5%
Nissan Motor Co. reported U.S. sales of 223,377 units in Q3, up 5.3% year over year.
The automaker said Nissan division sales represented 210,226 of its quarterly sales, while its luxury Infiniti line accounted for 13,151 sales.
Truck sales represented a majority of Nissan’s quarterly sales with 156,341 units. Its car sales totaled 67,036 units.
Rivian delivered over 13K units in Q3
Rivian Automotive delivered 13,201 vehicles in Q3, a 31.7% year-over-year increase from 10,018 units a year ago.
The EV maker said its delivery results were in line with its quarterly outlook. The company said it was narrowing its delivery guidance range to between 41,500 and 43,500 vehicles.
It had previously set a delivery target of between 40,000 and 46,000 vehicles this year.
Stellantis sales up 6%
Stellantis reported U.S. sales of 324,825 units in Q3, a 6% year-over-year increase.
The automaker reported sales gains for its Jeep, Chrysler, Ram and Fiat brands. Jeep sales were up 11%, led by the Wrangler, Gladiator and Wagoneer models. Ram sales jumped 26%, led by the Ram 1500.
“Fueled by sales growth across the Jeep, Ram, Chrysler and FIAT brands, our U.S. sales saw strong results in the third quarter, including the month of September, which was our highest monthly market share in the U.S. in 15 months,” Jeff Kommor, head of U.S. sales at Stellantis, said in a statement.
Tesla deliveries up more than 7%
Tesla delivered 497,099 vehicles in Q3, up 7.4% from 462,890 delivered in the same period last year.
While deliveries were up, YoY production totals fell. The company produced 447,450 vehicles during the quarter, down from 469,796 a year ago.
Toyota quarterly sales up nearly 16%
Toyota Motor North America sold 629,137 units in Q3, up 15.9% year over year.
The automaker reported that sales of electrified vehicles, which include EVs and hybrids, totaled 282,794 units, up 10.5% YoY.
“Strong customer demand continues across our entire lineup, and vehicles are selling as fast as we build them,” Andrew Gilleland, SVP at Toyota Motor North America, said in a statement. “As we gear up for the next-generation RAV4, the current model remains a customer favorite.”
Volkswagen of America sales fall 6%
Volkswagen of America sold 87,705 vehicles in Q3, down 6% year over year.
Despite the drop in overall sales, Volkswagen saw sales of the ID.4 SUV spike by 176%, with 12,470 units sold.
