Dive Insight:
After billions in electric vehicle write-downs, GM has scaled back its planned electric vehicle rollout. In the interim, the automaker is shifting focus to its more profitable full-size trucks and SUVs with significant investments in boosting manufacturing capacity for these models.
The Silverado pickup is a core model in GM’s current truck lineup, which also includes the closely related GMC Sierra. The automaker sold nearly 130,000 Silverado trucks in the first quarter of this year, making it the Chevrolet brand's best-selling model and an important contributor to GM’s annual profits. The 2027 Silverado 1500 will be built at GM’s truck assembly facilities in North America.
GM said it expanded Silverado trim options to seven in response to customer demand. The options include three lifted trims for off-road use, the ZR2, Trail Boss and Custom Trail Boss. Other trims are Work Truck, Custom, Silverado (formerly LT) and High Country luxury trim.
As the automaker’s EV losses began to mount in early 2025, GM last June announced a $4 billion investment in three U.S. plants and said it would shift its Orion Assembly plant near Detroit toward production of more profitable gasoline-powered full-size trucks and SUVs, starting in early 2027.
During GM’s Q1 earnings call in April, CEO Mary Barra also said the company is shifting more capacity for pickups and full-size SUVs to the U.S. to meet demand.
The two new V8 engines for the 2027 Silverado will be assembled at GM’s Flint Engine Operations in Michigan, Tonawanda Propulsion plant in Buffalo, New York, and its St. Catharines Propulsion plant in Ontario, Canada, per the release.
In May 2025, GM announced plans to invest $888 million in the Tonawanda Propulsion plant to support production of the next generation of its V8 gas engine for full-size trucks and SUVs. GM said last year that these new V8 engines will feature combustion and thermal management improvements designed to boost performance, reduce emissions and improve fuel economy.
“We pushed these engines through an extensive testing and validation process to make sure they deliver the durability, capability and dependability Silverado customers expect,” Mark Dickens, executive chief engineer, said in a statement. “From tough towing scenarios to the daily demands our customers put on their trucks, these next-generation V8s were engineered and proven to perform in the real world.”
New styling for the 2027 Silverado 1500 includes an all-new exterior with a bolder stance and stronger face with “more premium execution,” according to GM. Other updates include LED headlights and taillights, more pronounced wheel opening moldings, and rocker treatments. Custom and above trims will come with standard dual exhaust.
“The goal with the new Silverado was to create a truck that looks stronger, more modern with demanding presence at first glance, while staying true to the authentic truck character customers expect from Chevrolet,” the brand’s Global Executive Design Director Phil Zak said in a statement.
The interior of the 2027 Silverado features a more modern digital cockpit, anchored by a new edge-to-edge, 16.3-inch center touchscreen display and 12.2-inch driver information center that's standard across the entire Silverado lineup.
ZR2 and High Country trims include an 11.5-inch display for the front passenger, a head-up display and a digital rearview mirror. GM says the tech-forward layout provides drivers with an intuitive interface for navigation, media, vehicle information and available towing technologies.
Availability and pricing for the 2027 Silverado 1500 will be announced later this year, GM said. The base Silverado Work Truck starts just below $40,000, including destination, for the 2026 model year, while the ZR2 off-road trim tops $70,000.
