Among the multiple experiential opportunities at next month’s IAA Mobility 2025 will be Level 3 and Level 4 driverless rides taking place on highway and city streets around Munich.
Germany’s federal highway authority, Autobahn GmbH, will set up ride-and-drive testing areas on the Level 3 and 4 operating area on the A94 between the Munich-East motorway junction and Munich city center. Levels 3 and 4 are SAE-defined semi-autonomous and autonomous standards for vehicles, respectively representing conditional driving automation and high-driving automation abilities.
The routes hope to show how autonomous vehicles supplied by automakers and linked to the infrastructure’s cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) can handle various challenging scenarios including those involving construction sites, emergency vehicles and hazard warnings, while vehicle data and live traffic conditions will be demonstrated.
On the designated autobahn section, both automated driving levels will be engaged to demonstrate how vehicles equipped with Level 3 technology will drive autonomously until handing over control to the driver in certain conditions, while Level 4 tech will reveal how drivers can perform other functions in the fully automated mode, while also showcasing the technology’s ability to bring the vehicle safely to a stop without involvement by the driver.
Vehicles involved in the IAA Mobility autonomous-vehicle demonstrations will be provided by Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, with exhibits for these trips located in Open Space (Mercedes) in downtown Munich and the Summit (Volkswagen) at the Munich Messe convention center.
A variety of test rides or drives will be presented by a total of 22 exhibitors, making available 231 vehicles for visitors to experience.
Other automakers offering show attendees ride-and-drives include Audi, BYD, Chery, Ford, Hyundai, KIA, Polestar, Porsche and Smart, with Tier 1 auto suppliers Bosch, GAC, Mahle, Qualcomm and Xpeng also participating.
