Bentley continues the fevered trend for automakers to build super-fast SUVs with the launch of its most powerful Bentayga model so far, the Bentayga Speed V8.
The “off-roader,” one unlikely ever to see more challenging terrain than a manicured gravel driveway, now boasts an uprated pure internal-combustion V-8 version of that used in the brand’s Ultra Performance Hybrid system seen in Bentley’s road models, the Continental and the Flying Spur.
This twin-turbocharged 4.0L V-8 has more power than its W-12 predecessor and claims a maximum power output of 641 hp and maximum torque of 623 lb.-ft. (850 Nm).
Peak torque is delivered between 2,250 to 4,500 rpm, creating what Bentley claims is its characteristic “torque plateau” delivering a wave of acceleration.
Bentley claims the new Bentayga can accelerate from standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.4 seconds on the way to a top speed of 193 mph (310 km/h).
To accentuate its extra performance, customers can order the optional full titanium Akrapovic exhaust system that features four tailpipes versus the standard’s system’s twin elliptical tailpipes.
Driving dynamics are selectable with three driving modes. Comfort retains the existing model’s sophisticated levels of drive while Sport significantly increases steering response, roadholding and driver feel, enhanced by a 15% increase in suspension damping stiffness. Enhanced Sport mode ramps up the dynamics even more with brake torque vectoring to allow sharper turn-ins.
Optional carbon ceramic brakes allow the selection of ESC Dynamic in Sport mode, which reduces ESC intervention to permit extra drift angles or power-on oversteer where appropriate. Also included in ESC Dynamic programming is Launch Control, a first for any Bentayga model.
The Bentayga Speed now also includes all-wheel steering for rapid low- and medium-speed maneuvering. At high speeds, the rear wheels steer in the same direction as the front to improve stability.
Prices and market availability have yet to be announced but based on current model starting prices, a sticker price starting from $220,000 is expected.
