Volkswagen mates all-wheel drive with the Golf SportWagen to create the new Golf Alltrack, debuting this week at the 2016 New York International Auto Show.

Set to hit U.S. showrooms this fall as a ’17 model, the Golf Alltrack is powered by VW’s 1.8L TSI turbocharged 4-cyl. that delivers 170 hp and 199 lb.-ft.(270 Nm) of torque. Initially the all-terrain model will be available only with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, but a 6-speed manual will be added at a later date.

VW’s 4MOTION AWD system sends up to 50% of the torque to the rear wheels if needed and briefly brakes a slipping wheel if needed to improve traction. Ground clearance is raised 1 in. (25 mm) on the Alltrack compared with the SportWagen.

Selecting “Off-Road Mode” adds hill descent control and optimizes traction control for off-road terrain. Instrumentation shows compass, steering angle and altitude settings when driving off-road.

Exterior-styling cues include unique bumpers, wheel wells and side sills, plus a front fascia incorporating foglights and a unique honeycomb grille. Standard are 17-in. wheels with 18-in. discs included on SEL models.

Inside, leatherette seating surfaces are standard, aluminum covers the accelerator pedal and there’s special ambient lighting and Alltrack branding throughout.

The typical Golf suite of safety features is offered including electronic stability control, automatic post-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane assist, autonomous braking and park assist.

Pricing has not been announced.
