Canada Medium-and Heavy-Duty Truck Sales Recover in July

After a dip last month, Canadian medium- and heavy-duty truck sales recovered in July and managed to post a modest 1.9% increase as deliveries hit 3,631 units compared with 3,564 from prior-year, WardsAuto data shows. All segments except for Class 8 enjoyed gains.

Sales in Class 8 slipped for the second straight month, falling 2.9% to 2,463 units. Freightliner (+10.8%) and Volvo (+23.1%) were the only brands to post a gain. Freightliner has continued to widen the gap as the top seller, increasing its stake to 28.4% through seven months. PACCAR’s Kenworth brand sank 16.2% and Peterbilt was down a more modest 2.0%. Mack suffered the worst performance among all manufacturers, dropping 40.6% and cutting its share by almost half.

Class 7 deliveries were up 6.1% on volume of 333 units. Gains by the class-leading sellers were enough to offset double-digit losses reported by smaller volume competitors. International led the way with a 52.0% jump to 152 units, nearly half of the Class 7 volume.

In Class 6, International (+8.3%), Hino (+50.0%) and Freightliner (+100.0) posted gains while the rest of the market faltered. Overall sales were up 21.5% on sales of 147 units.

Class 5 ended July up 9.9% on sales of 567 units. FCA recorded 69.0% growth, while top-seller Ford slid 1.3%.

Class 4 enjoyed the best performance in July, up 57.1% on sales of 121 units. Ford increased its share of the segment with a 76.0% sales jump, good for a 72.7% stake of Class 4. Isuzu’s import models tripled on small volume of 9 units.

Through July, Canada big-truck sales were running 7.4% ahead of like-2014, totaling 25,908 units.
