Accord Topples Camry as Best-Selling U.S. Car

In the battle for sedan supremacy, Honda Motor Co. Ltd.'s Accord knocks Toyota Motor Corp.'s Camry out of the top spot as the best-selling car in America for the '01 model year. Accord posted sales of 412,074 vs. Camry's 388,512. Ford Motor Co.'s Taurus placed third with 349,742 units sold.

The '01 Honda Civic is the best-selling small car in the U.S. for the fourth straight year with sales of 323,074, beating the Ford Focus, which had sales of 261,542. American Honda's '01 model year sales of 1,171,511, up 8% over 2000 model sales, set a new record for the company.

Honda's luxury Acura Div. also broke its sales record set back in 1989. Acura had sales of 165,983, a 24.7% increase over the 2001 model year. Acura's 3.2L TL wins the title of best-selling luxury sedan for the second year in a row with sales of '01 models reaching 68,229 units, besting BMW AG's 3-series sedan at 61,992 units.
