Mercedes-Benz Refines EQS

The electric sedan gains subtle styling updates and a larger-capacity battery for greater range in the face of added competition.

Mercedes-Benz upgrades the three-year-old EQS, giving the upmarket electric sedan several subtle exterior styling changes and a larger-capacity battery to improve its appeal against competition from the newer BMW i7 and Lucid Air.

On sale in the U.S. later this year, the ’24 model attempts to answer criticism of the EQS’s front-end styling with a new-look “black panel” grille featuring both horizontal and vertical chrome applications within a standard AMG Line front bumper.

The upgraded sedan also receives a traditional 3-pointed star emblem on its hood – something Mercedes-Benz says was driven by demands from EQS customers looking for a dose of S-Class-like visual cachet.

Inside (pictured, above) there are new-look air vents within the B-pillars and greater seatback adjustment for the optional Rear Comfort Package Plus executive seats, along with improved cushioning. Additionally, the EQS now offers a front passenger seat that can be folded forward by up to 38 degrees.   

On the technical side, the EQS receives a larger-capacity battery as optional equipment. It gains 9.6 kWh of capacity over the existing 108.4-kWh unit, endowing the all-wheel-drive EQS450 4Matic with an added 11% or 51 miles (82 km) of range on the WLTP test cycle at 497 miles (800 km), according to Mercedes-Benz.

The range champion of the EQS lineup remains the rear-wheel-drive EQS450+. With the optional larger-capacity battery it is now claimed to offer a range of up to 511 miles (823 km) on the WLTP cycle.
