GRAZ – Magna International Inc. confirms it has landed a contract to develop and manufacture aluminum bodies for the upcoming Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG super sports car at its Magna Steyr Fahrzeugtechnik AG & Co. KG plant here.

Magna also provided engineering support for new SLS AMG.

Magna Steyr also will produce other major parts and modules for the vehicle, including the gullwing doors, hood and deck lid.

Most SLS AMG parts will be manufactured at a Magna stamping plant in Albersdorf, Austria.

In addition to assembling the bodies, Magna’s Graz plant will handle most of the painting, excluding some special colors.

Magna Steyr is providing engineering support for the development of the complete vehicle.

“We are very proud that we are the only automotive supplier in Europe to master the technology needed to manufacture a pure aluminum body,” Siegfried Wolf, Magna’s co-CEO, says in a prepared statement. “This highlights our leading position in terms of innovative technologies.”

The contract will secure 200 jobs in Albersdorf and Graz.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show last month. Body production in Graz will start this year. The market launch for the car, which will be available as coupe and convertible, is scheduled for next spring.
