Audi Adds New Gasoline Engines to Mix at Hungarian Plant

VIENNA – Audi Hungaria Motor launches volume production of new 1.2L and 1.4L 4-cyl. gasoline engines at its plant in Gyor, Hungary.

The engines deliver 84-138 hp and 122-184 lb.-ft. (165-250 Nm) of torque.

“The advantage of the new engines is that they can be installed in many of the company‘s models due to their modular design,” Achim Heinfling, managing director-engine production at Audi Hungaria Motor, says in a statement. “That is why we are planning to build them in large volumes in the future.”

The engines are going into the new Audi A3 and the Volkswagen Polo and Golf, among other models.

The auto maker plans to produce up to 1,500 of the new 1.2L and 1.4L powerplants a day.

Audi manufactured a record 1,039,026 engines in Gyor in the first six months of the year, up 10.7% from like-2011. The previous first-half record was reached in January-June 2008 with 1,023,228.

Included in first-half 2012 production are 769,586 4-cyl. and 5-cyl. gasoline and diesel engines, 255,9116-cyl. powerplants and 13,529 8-cyl., 10-cyl. and 12-cyl. engines.

Audi Hungaria also assembled 21,569 cars in the period, down 12.1 % from like-2011. The total included 10,042 TT Coupes, 5,962 A3 Cabriolets, 3,479 TT Roadsters and 2,035 RS 3 Sportbacks.
