LAS VEGAS – American Axle & Manufacturing is moving both quickly and deliberately to thrive in the electrification era of the auto industry. Once a division of General Motors, the stalwart supplier of axles and driveshafts is well on its way to being a major player in the software-defined-vehicle era.
The company has two new components gaining a lot of attention from OEMs: a next-generation 3-in-1 electric-drive unit and its e-Beam axle for electric pickups and commercial vehicles.
AAM will put the electric-drive unit into production this year for REE Automotive, and the e-Beam axle is committed to a new electric pickup in development with Stellantis. The company is also readying a 2-in-1 electric drive-unit showcased at CES 2024 in the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance car. It’s the first plug-in hybrid vehicle to feature the supplier’s 2-in-1 electric driveline technology.
