Abarth is trying to breathe some excitement into the flagging battery-electric vehicle market with the upcoming debut of its most powerful model to date, the Abarth 600e Scorpionissima.
It’s having a sneak preview filming for television commercials in Italy while test mules are undergoing final tests and making its first public debut in Milan.
The BEV claims a whopping power equivalent of 240 hp but will be limited to just 1,949 models produced globally.
Ironically for a technology-laden product, the Scorpionissima goes distinctly old school, boasting a mechanical limited-slip differential to add to its dynamic driving experience over the more standard electronic system used throughout modern car offerings. Abarth says the use of a mechanical system “guarantees excellent driving stability, improved handling and traction.” Traction should be further enhanced with the use of performance tires jointly developed with the supplier for the Formula E track racing series.
It's likely to be powered by a pumped-up version of the Fiat 600e's powertrain which features a 54-kWh lithium-ion battery pack married to a 115-kW electric motor. Curb weight is likely be less than the base Abarth's 3,344 lbs. (1,520 kg) to boost performance still further.
Its body color is dubbed Hypnotic Purple, described as “inspired by the post-puncture hypnotic effect”. The model also features wide, low-profile 20-in. wheels designed to accommodate a beefed-up brake system.
