Styling Distinguishes Four New Hyundai Kona Variants

Hyundai introduces a new-generation Kona compact CUV in four variants sharing an architecture but featuring individual styling.

The Kona will be offered with battery-electric, hybrid-electric and internal-combustion powertrains as well as a sporty, ICE-powered N Line.

The automaker describes the new Kona’s design as EV-derived and futuristic, with “bolder styling that conveys a more dynamic road presence and driver-centric interior.” The CUV is 171 ins. (4,355 mm) long, 6 ins. (150 mm) longer than the previous generation, based on the EV variant. It’s also 1 in. (25 mm) wider and the wheelbase is 2.3 ins. (60 mm) longer.

Hyundai says it developed the EV design and then adapted it to the HEV, ICE and N Line models. The automaker says this approach allowed tech-centric design thinking to be brought to all variants.

Design features common to all iterations of the new Kona include a clean, distinctive nose contributing to the CUV’s aerodynamics; sculpted wheel-arch cladding that incorporates the headlamps and taillamps; and sharp, diagonal side creases connecting the satin chrome molding from the beltline to the spoiler, creating a contour that wraps around the entire vehicle.

The new-gen Kona’s larger interior provides practical features and an evolved in-car experience to accommodate diverse lifestyles, Hyundai says. Elsewhere inside are 12.3-in. (31-cm) dual wide displays, ambient lighting, column-type shift-by-wire relocated from the center console to behind the steering wheel, and a curveless second-row bench seat.

Hyundai doesn’t disclose powertrain specifications, pricing, availability or other details.

“Upscaled with Kona’s unique character, the all-new Kona confidently expresses its bold and dynamic presence,” Sang Yup Lee, executive vice president and head of Hyundai Design Center, says in a news release. “Kona has evolved in every respect to embrace an even wider range of diversity, to become a true lifestyle supporter.”
