GM Launches Child-Seat Campaign

GM's child-seat campaign is kicked off by CEO Rick Wagoner at the auto maker's first dealership in Harlem in more than 40 years.

GM is partnering with the city and Safe Kids Worldwide to offer the free child seats and provide instructions to parents on how to install them properly.

NEW YORK – General Motors Corp. Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner launches a program to provide New Yorkers with free child safety seats and inspections at the auto maker’s recently opened Harlem dealerships.

New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Harlem Congressman Charles B. Rangel joined Wagoner for the program’s kickoff.

“We are very proud to have a presence in Harlem’s vibrant community and to serve the needs of its important base,” Wagoner says. The facility houses Chevrolet-Saturn of Harlem and Potamkin Cadillac-Hummer.

The 300,000-sq.-ft. (27,870-sq.-m) multilevel GM sales outlet is the first auto dealership in Harlem in more than 40 years. It was built with $60 million in private investment. About 150 new jobs were created and eventually 200 people will be employed at the facility.

“The investments by GM and these two dealers, and the new jobs they created, are a tremendous boost for the local economy,” Bloomberg says.

Rangel commends GM for its commitment to minority dealers, adding, “The only thing more important than economic opportunities for our working families is the safety of our children.”
