BMW’s M division expands its performance-car lineup with the unveiling of the M8 Gran Coupe.

The svelte rival to the Mercedes-AMG GT63 4Matic+ joins the 2-door M8 Coupe and M8 Convertible, adding 4-door, 4-seat versatility to a three-strong M8 model range.

The M8 Gran Coupe is powered by the same twin-turbocharged 4.4L gasoline V-8 as the M8 Coupe and M8 Convertible. It comes in two states of tune: the standard model makes 600 hp and a range-topping Competition model packs 617 hp. The torque loading for both models is put at 553 lb.-ft. (750 Nm) on a band of revs between 1,800 and 5,600 rpm.

Despite weighing 209 lbs. (95 kg) more than the M8 Coupe at 4,356 lbs. (1,980 kg), BMW claims the same 0-60 mph (97 km/h) times as its 2-door sibling at 3.1 seconds for the standard M8 Gran Coupe and 3.0 seconds for the M8 Gran Coupe Competition. Top speed is limited to 155 mph (250 km/h) or 190 mph (306 km/h) in combination with an optional M Driver’s Package.

Like the M8 Coupe and M8 Convertible, the M8 Gran Coupe comes with a variable all-wheel-drive system and Active M differential, a setup that allows a rear-wheel-driving mode.

The M8 Gran Coupe, which is planned to make its public debut at next month’s Los Angeles auto show, is priced at $130,000 and $143,000, respectively, for the standard and Competition models, each with a $995 destination charge in North America.
