Following news that Toyota reveals two new consumer BEV concepts later this month, the automaker also brings a last-mile electric LCV to the Japan Motor Show.
Its Kayoibako concept is focused on the commercial fleet buyer and draws its design from the storage capabilities of shipping containers that can be configured with interchangeable interiors to meet different goods transportation needs. It claims this “ultra-expandable” design allows the vehicle to be tailored for different uses. With hardware and software that can also be configured for different use cases, the Kayoibako claims to function as an element in smart grids and other intelligent social systems.
Toyota says it can also provide social infrastructure solutions. For example, it can be customized for low-volume goods transportation and used by smart distribution systems for last-mile logistics. It can also be adapted to support local communities when fitted with shelves to serve as a mobile shop or seats to operate as a shuttle bus.
The concept vehicle on show measures 13 feet (3,990 mm) long, 5.87 feet (1,790 mm) wide and 6 feet (1,855 mm) high and has a 9.2-foot. (2,800 mm) wheelbase. Inside there’s a maximum length of 10.26 feet (3,127 mm) and 4.7 feet (1,437 mm) in height. No powertrain details have yet been published.
