The 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI continues its legacy as a quintessential hot hatch, blending performance, practicality and the best modern tech that the Volkswagen Group could muster for the enthusiast crowd.
While the GTI, introduced 50 years ago in Germany, retains the core elements that have made it a favorite among devotees the world over, the 2025 model introduces several updates and changes that enhance its appeal.
Under the hood, the U.S.-spec 2025 GTI maintains the turbocharged 2.0L inline-4 delivering 241 hp and 273 lb.-ft. (370 Nm) of torque. This engine is exclusively paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, as the manual option has been discontinued for this model year. Oh, the pain.
Even without the stick and clutch, though, driving the GTI remains a fun, engaging experience. The engine offers strong low- and midrange torque, providing brisk acceleration and responsive performance. The DCT delivers quick and smooth shifts. When we sped up to enter a highway, we are reminded why we might spend an extra $10,000 over like-sized, more fuel-efficient hatchbacks.
The 2025 GTI continues to impress with its balanced handling and road manners. The front-wheel-drive setup, combined with a well-tuned suspension, offers precise steering and confident cornering. Adaptive dampers, available in higher trims, allow drivers to tailor the ride to their preferences, from comfortable daily driving to head-tossing performance when taking the long way home through the twisty backroads.
On any road (not peppered with potholes), the GTI feels composed and agile. Its versatility ensures that it can handle daily commutes with ease while still delivering the excitement expected from a performance hatchback. And the hatch setup makes this pocket rocket handy for everything from groceries to mulch.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the 2025 GTI receives notable updates aimed at improving user experience. A significant change is the introduction of a larger 12.9-in. (33-cm) touchscreen infotainment system, which replaces the previous setup. This new system offers enhanced graphics and responsiveness, providing a more intuitive interface for drivers. Ther’s no dash-mounted volume knob, but there is a manual slider below the screen.
One of the most talked-about additions is the integration of an AI-powered digital assistant, utilizing ChatGPT technology. This feature allows for natural language interactions, enabling drivers to control various functions, such as climate settings and navigation, through voice commands. On our drive, the function worked easily and without error.
Volkswagen has also addressed previous criticisms by reintroducing physical buttons for essential controls, improving tactile feedback and ease of use. The cabin retains its signature plaid seat pattern option in the S and 380 S Trims (via heated front Top Sport seats adorned with the classic Scalepaper Plaid inserts).
Exterior Updates
The exterior of the 2025 GTI sees subtle yet effective revisions. The front fascia features narrower headlights and a redesigned bumper with hook-like details inspired by the Golf R. At the rear, new taillight clusters and a revised diffuser design contribute to a more modern and aggressive appearance.
These updates not only enhance the GTI's aesthetic appeal but also improve its aerodynamic efficiency. New wheel designs and available color options further allow buyers to personalize their vehicles to match their preferences.
The 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI continues to uphold its reputation as a well-rounded hot hatch, offering a compelling blend of performance, practicality and advanced technology. While the removal of the manual transmission may disappoint some purists, the enhancements in infotainment, interior quality and overall refinement ensure that the GTI remains a top contender in its segment.
Value
The 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI is available in three trim levels in the U.S., each offering a blend of performance and features to suit different preferences and budgets.
The S, with the new larger touchscreen, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, wireless charging pad and safety suite starts at $33,670. The SE, which adds sunroof, Harman Kardon premium audio and other features starts at $38,670. The Autobahn trim, which includes adaptive damping (DCC), 19-in. wheels with summer performance tires, head-up display, leather front seats, heated rear seats and Park Assist Plus starts at $42,105.
That Autobahn edition seems like the weakest trim in the lineup, giving buyers stuff they won’t miss when they buy the lower trims.
Good on VW for keeping the GTI in U.S. dealerships.
