British luxury sports performance brand McLaren will use batteries supplied by Chinese swap-out pioneer Nio.
According to a news report by local Chinese media outlet Yiou, McLaren Automotive will use the lithium-ion batteries in its hybrid powertrains, although it is as yet unclear whether the supplies would also cover its Formula One racing program.
The British sports car maker has a number of models currently employing its hyper-hybrid powertrain system including the Artura, P1, Speedtail and 720S.
Nio’s new 4680 large cylindrical battery cells will be used in the battery packs supplied to McLaren and small-scale production is expected to begin next year, the report says.
Battery packs will have a capacity of about 10 kWh to suit McLaren’'s hybrid models.
The battery collaboration is thought to be the result of the two companies now sharing the same investor, the Abu Dhabi government’s fund CYVN Holdings.
