LG Unveils Auto Displays for Software-Defined Vehicles

Screens set to dominate the in-cabin user experience as SDVs gain foothold in auto sector.

Korean electronics giant LG is unveiling an in-cabin display specifically aimed at the emerging software-defined vehicle (SDV) at CES 2024.

The company says it recognizes that these smartphones-on-wheels are leading the "screenification" of the on-board user experience where a multitude of display screens serve the individual needs of vehicle occupants, both on the move and for infotainment services when stationary, or in future potential autonomous driving modes.

Its LG Display showcases various large-sized automotive display solutions that span the entire dashboard areas, employing differentiated technologies such as plastic organic light emitting diode (P-OLED), advanced thin organic light-emitting diode (OLED ATO) and low-temperature polycrystalline silicon liquid crystal display (LTPS LCD).

LG says its ultra-high-resolution P-OLED features a flexible plastic substrate for a lightweight and flexible panel. ATO, on the other hand, uses glass substrates to offer the core strength of automotive OLED at a more competitive price point. It also claims its LTPS LCD is a high-performance panel that enables larger and higher-resolution displays compared to existing LCDs.

Picking up technologies from smartphones, the displays can provide individual privacy modes that automatically adjust the display's viewing angle away from the driver's line of sight to keep their eyes focused on the road and reduce distraction. When active, content such as movies or games being displayed on the front passenger's side is diverted away from the driver's side so that only the passenger can watch it.

Its systems will also feature slidable and foldable OLEDs installed in the back of seats that can be hidden away or extended for use on demand.

Byeong-koo Kim, senior vice president and head of auto business group at LG Display, says, “We will continue to strengthen our global leadership with our latest optimal automotive display solutions for the next generation of mobility.”
