Rumors that Jaguar Land Rover will be building vehicles with electrified powertrains using platforms provided by a Chinese automaker are being denied in Chinese media outlets.
Specialist automotive publication CnEVPost quotes local media that the British brand is in negotiations with the Chinese automaker Chery, which already is involved in a vehicle production joint venture with JLR’s Indian owners, Tata Motors.
A local media outlet, 36r, suggests JLR will be the first luxury automaker to adopt Chery's platform and the partnership is nearly finalized. Its report says JLR will build new models using the hybrid and battery-electric technology platforms of Chery's Exeed brand.
The report cites a person familiar with the matter saying the first model based on the brand will be released as early as the second half of 2024. It also says that from 2010-2017, JLR's sales in China grew from 26,100 to 146,000 units but, by 2023, that number had fallen back to 106,400 units.
However, within hours of the rumors' publication, Chery Chairman Yin Tongyue tells another local media outlet, Yicai, that stories of JLR adopting his company’s platforms are not true.
