Mahle Designs Diagnostic Technology for EV Systems

Mahle claims to be the world’s first supplier to enable independent workshops to perform battery diagnostics on EVs with the Mahle TechPRO diagnostic tool launched in March.

Mahle will debut its latest electric-vehicle solution for independent workshops, claiming the potential for comprehensive diagnostic service of most electrified powertrains.

To be unveiled next month at Automechanika in Frankfurt, Germany, Mahle Aftermarket presents the Mahle BatteryPRO diagnostics and service solutions including E-Scan, E-Health and E-Care modes.

In addition, the automotive supplier demonstrates workshop equipment for the calibration of driver-assistance systems as well as air conditioning and transmission oil servicing solutions, through which the Stuttgart company specifically supports independent workshops with its replacement and service parts.

Mahle claims to be the world’s first supplier to enable independent workshops to perform battery diagnostics on EVs with the Mahle TechPRO diagnostic tool launched in March. By the end of the year, the E-Scan function will be augmented by the E-Health and E-Care equipment.

E-Health (pictured, below) performs diagnostics on vehicle batteries via the charging plug and evaluates the measured data in the cloud. In this way, the state of a battery can be classified in relation to all other recorded batteries of the same model in the fleet.

In addition, E-Health generates a forecast of the remaining expected life of a vehicle.

Since the start of 2022, the new diagnostics solution has been tested in practice together with TÜV NORD Mobilität and an unnamed European fleet operator. E-Care is a service unit for performing maintenance on the cooling circuits of vehicle batteries.

In terms of internal-combustion powertrain emissions, it will be mandatory in Germany, at the beginning of 2023, to have measurements of both tailpipe emissions and particulates. For this Mahle will present its EmissionPRO equipment as well as with the PMU 400 device for measuring particulates.

Mahle claims its equipment can measure the individual nanoparticles in the exhaust gas flow, even in very low concentrations. This means the sample taken from the exhaust pipe can be diluted up to 200 times with clean air to minimize the build-up of particles and dirt in the most sensitive parts of the measuring instrument.

Mahle also will present its Tech PRO Digital ADAS 2.0 for the calibration of driver-assistance systems and the latest generation of the ACX A/C service unit series and the ATX transmission oil service unit series. The ongoing development of the Digital ADAS 2.0 claims to shorten the calibration time even further and enables calibration in a few minutes. Thanks to special laser distance gauges, which are connected directly to the diagnostic tool, the tool can record all parameters of the vehicle alignment directly so that the calibration can be performed without manual input. Even the vertical positioning of the monitor takes place automatically. The system simultaneously allows the vehicle type to be gathered automatically through the license plate number, saving the operator the trouble of selecting the vehicle manually.

Olaf Henning, member of the Mahle management committee and director of the Aftermarket business unit, says: “Our presence at the Automechanika shows impressively how much the pace of our innovation has accelerated. With our solutions, we came in far ahead of the global competition, especially in the area of battery diagnostics.”

Automechanika takes place Sept. 13-17.
