Honda unveils its second-generation HR-V compact CUV, a sleeker, more aerodynamic version of its predecessor.
Honda engineers based the earlier HR-V on the platform, and some might say styling, of the now discontinued Fit that was an economical but bare-bones runabout. The new HR-V takes its cues from the Civic, giving the ’23 HR-V a much-needed exterior facelift that likely will attract younger urban buyers.
The HR-V came out of the gate in 2015 as a solid competitor in the crowded compact crossover field. That year it clocked 41,969 sales, placing it ninth in a field of 16, according to Wards Intelligence data. In following years the HR-V ranked in or near the top 20% of sales in its segment, which grew to 26% by 2020. In 2021, it scored 137,090 sales, making it the top- selling model in its division. Between January and March 2022 it logged 42,168 sales, leading the first-quarter pack.
With those sales numbers it’s a good bet that the styling boost will ensure it continues to lead the pack.
Highlights include a geometric grille that borders on art deco design, angular, cat-like LED headlamps, hidden wipers and door-mounted mirrors. The low beltline underscores the HR-V’s athletic styling that includes an extended hood, sculpted hatch and liftgate spoiler.
Honda notes the latest model has a longer wheelbase and wider stance, but the Japanese automaker is holding back specifications, pricing, powertrain and interior details until closer to launch this summer.
