Toyota will invest $391 million at its San Antonio truck assembly plant, raising the automaker’s total spending there to more than $3 billion.

The investment is part of Toyota’s previously announced commitment to spend $13 billion at its U.S. facilities over five years through 2021. Separately, Toyota Texas will donate $500,000 to Alamo Promise, a San Antonio-based program ensuring free community-college tuition to local high-school graduates, to continue funding local workforce development.

In addition, Aisin AW, a supplier to Toyota Texas and other automakers, announces it will invest $400 million and bring 900 new jobs to a future facility in nearby Cibolo, TX.

Toyota’s San Antonio plant assembles fullsize Tundra and midsize Tacoma pickup trucks and directly employs more than 3,200 people. Including its 23 on-site suppliers, total employment exceeds 7,200. The new investment will make the plant more competitive and efficient while remaining flexible with multi-vehicle production capabilities, the automaker says.

The next-generation Tundra is slated to go into production in San Antonio next year, according to Wards Intelligence forecasting partner LMC Automotive.
