Lamborghini’s new Aventador SVJ breaks into the record books even before its official global unveiling by taking the lap record for production cars at the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife in a time of 6 minutes, 44.97 seconds.
The radically camouflaged Aventador SVJ achieved the feat in the hands of official Lamborghini driver Marco Mapelli at the 12.8-mile (20.6-km) toll-road circuit that was closed to the public for the attempt.
The Aventador SVJ boasts higher power output, with lightweight materials contributing to a weight-to-power ratio of only 4.4 lb./hp (1.98 kg/hp). It also features Lamborghini’s patented ALA 2.0 active aerodynamics system with aero vectoring for improved handling and downforce, plus other aerodynamic features specific to the SVJ.
Even before the attempt, development engineers were confident after a computer-simulated virtual attempt at the Nordschleife returned a better lap time than the Lamborghini Huracán Performante. In 2015 the Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 SV delivered a sub-seven-minute lap time and in 2016 the Huracán Performante took the Nordschleife production-car record with a lap time of 6:52.01, which it held until September 2017.
