VALBONNE, France – BMW says it will launch the all-new 3-Series Gran Turismo at the Geneva auto show March 15.
The third model in the 3-Series lineup is significantly longer and wider and has a different mission than the other models with its four doors, rear hatch and a coupe-like fastback silhouette.
It is not a sports car, but rather a car for sports-oriented drivers who prefer the lower center of gravity of a sedan combined with the flexibility and roominess of an SUV.
The 3-Series GT has a strong aerodynamic efficiency that calls for the first active rear spoiler in the history of BMW road cars. This is evidenced by the outstanding drag coefficient of 0.29, reducing both fuel consumption and wind noise.
The rear spoiler extends automatically once the car reaches 68 mph (110 km/h). It reduces lift by adding up to 35% pressure on the rear axle, thus giving the GT the same dynamic qualities of the 3-Series sedan.
The new GT is 190 ins. (483 cm) long, 59 ins. (150 cm) high and 72 ins. (183 cm) wide. The car will be offered with Sport Line, Luxury Line or Modern Line equipment packages, as well as the optional M Sport package that will be available in July.
At launch, the lineup will range from the 318d through the 335i. Two diesel twin-turbo 4-cyl. 2.0L engines produce 140 hp and 180 hp with 236 lb.-ft. (320 Nm) and 280 lb.-ft. (380 Nm) of torque, respectively.
These complement the three twin-turbo gasoline engines that include two 2.0L 4-cyls. producing 180 hp and 199 lb.-ft. (270 Nm) of torque and 241 hp with and 258 lb.-ft. (350 Nm) of torque. The 3.0L 6-cyl. makes 301 hp and 295 ft.-lbs. (400 Nm) of torque.
Later this year, BMW also will also offer a 217-hp 325d GT version and xDrive alternatives. The standard transmission for all trim levels is a 6-speed manual, with an 8-speed automatic as optional.
BMW says orders will start in March with the first deliveries of the 3-Series Gran Turismo to begin in June. Prices, including sales tax in Germany, will range from €36,160 ($48,361) for the 318d to €47,200 ($63,126) for the 335i with the 6 speed manual.
