Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America has won contracts to provide ignition coil modules and ignition coils to General Motors Corp. for car and truck engines worldwide.

The supplier will eventually supply all ignition coils worldwide for GM, tripling Mitsubishi's current business with GM. MEAA will make the ignition coil modules at its plant in Maysville, KY. The plant will be expanded to hande the increased production. Ignition coil modules are used by auto makers in distributorless, or “coil-on-plug,” electronic ignition systems.

As part of a bigger contract, MEAA will supply ignition coils to GM for eight years, through 2009. Total value of the contract is $730 million. At its peak, MEAA will be producing coils for 2 million engines annually.
