Automotive supplier Magna opens its 32nd facility in Mexico, a body and chassis manufacturing plant in San Luis Potosí that initially will employ 400 people.
The 189,000-sq.-ft. (17,580-sq.-m) plant will manufacture structural welded assemblies for global automakers including BMW and Mercedes-Benz. It is expected to grow to about 1,000 employees at full production, increasing Magna’s workforce in Mexico to more than 28,000, the Aurora, ON, Canada-based company says in a news release.
“We are so glad that Magna, a global company, decided to invest in San Luis Potosí. Magna could choose any country in the world and their decision shows confidence in Mexico,” San Luis Potosí Gov. Juan Manuel Carreras Lopez said at the grand opening ceremony.
Magna established its first facility in Mexico in 1991 with the opening of Autotek Puebla.
Globally, the company employs more than 168,000 people at 335 manufacturing operations and 96 product development, engineering and sales centers in 28 countries. Magna products include body exteriors and structures, power and vision technologies, seating systems and complete vehicle solutions.
