Hyundai is installing South Korea’s largest-ever rooftop photovoltaic power plant at its vehicle-assembly complex in Asan, near Seoul.
The program involves installation of 40,000 solar photovoltaic modules with design, engineering and installation by the Korea Midland Power, a leading Korean renewable-energy company.
The thermal plant will generate up to 10 megawatts of power, capable of providing electricity for 3,200 households.
The electric power will be purchased by Korea Electric Power for distribution on its grid in the Asan area.
The modules will be installed on 2.3 million sq.-ft. (213,000 sq.-m) of rooftop area on the Asan plant’s stamping, welding, vehicle-assembly and engine-assembly buildings. Installation will be completed by the end of the year.
Hyundai says a traditional thermoelectric plant that generates equivalent power would produce some 5,600 tons (5,100 t) of carbon-dioxide emissions annually.
