Gestamp, a Spanish developer and manufacturer of metal automotive components, opens its second production facility in San Luis Potosí state, Mexico. The new plant includes hot-stamping production capabilities and Gestamp’s first hydroforming press in North America.
The €74 million ($86 million) plant, covering 1.5 million sq.-ft. (140,000 sq.-m), employs more than 300 people and is equipped with 120 robots, among other technologies.
San Luis Potosí will become Gestamp’s first plant in Mexico for manufacturing chassis parts.
The new plant will offer multi-technology solutions to its customers in North America. Its hot-stamping capabilities allow the production of parts that are both lighter and safer. Hydroforming, meanwhile, uses the force of water to form complex shaped steel that can be integrated into the vehicle’s structural components.
Gestamp’s Edscha subsidiary, also located in San Luis Potosi, specializes in mechanisms and employs 270 people. The company now operates seven plants in Mexico with more than 3,600 employees.
In 2018, Gestamp opened six plants worldwide. In addition to Mexico, Gestamp this year will open new production facilities in Slovakia, the U.S. and Morocco.
