Europe’s Fiscal Ills in Lamborghini’s Rearview Mirror

Executive Summary

More than two-thirds of the supercars were sold outside Europe last year, including 25% in the U.S.

Europe’s economy remains stalled, but that hasn’t slowed Italian supercar maker Lamborghini.

Sales last year reached a record 2,197 units, up 26.4% compared with year-ago, according to WardsAuto data. Revenues jumped 46% to €469 million ($611 million), Lamborghini says.

The 10-cyl. Gallardo represented slightly more than half of 2012 volume and became Lamborghini’s all-time best seller with more than 13,000 deliveries. The new Aventador LP700-4 accounted for the balance.

President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann says more than two-thirds of last year’s sales were outside Europe: Asia/Pacific 35%; Europe, 29%; North America, 28% (including 25% in the U.S.); and the Middle East and South Africa, 8%.

“In spite of ongoing worldwide financial and economic uncertainties, Lamborghini has delivered a very satisfying performance in 2012, confirming the strength of our product and commercial strategy,” he says in a statement published on the brand’s website.

Raffaello Porro, director-communication and external relations, says the auto maker, a Volkswagen subsidiary, is profitable but does not elaborate.
