BMW Malaysia Expanding ASEAN Export Footprint

The export-hub plan is announced as BMW introduces two new models to be locally assembled in the country. The BMW X1 and BMW X4 will be the ninth and 10th models to join the portfolio of vehicles built in Malaysia.

BMW is making Malaysia its export hub for its 3-, 5- and 7-Series variants to Vietnam and the Philippines starting in 2018.

BMW Malaysia Managing Director and CEO Han Sang Yun says production capacity will be raised to 11,000 units a year from the present 8,000 to handle the new export markets.

“We at BMW Group Malaysia are pleased to be able to raise our competency here to assemble and export these premium vehicles to emerging markets in the region to grow our capabilities in the ASEAN region,” Han says in a statement.

Han says the addition of the X1 and X4 is further testament to BMW’s longstanding investment and commitment to Malaysia as a strategic hub for the BMW Group in the region.

The BMW assembly plant in Kulim, 210 miles (340 km) north of Kuala Lumpur, now assembles 20 variants of BMW and Mini vehicles.
