The EPA last year certified a 2.2L version of Skyactiv diesel in the Mazda CX-5 CUV, but the engine is not in the U.S.-market CX-5 or any other Mazda. A spokesman says don’t take that as a sign Mazda is waffling on offering a diesel in the U.S.
JATO analyst Felipe Munoz attributes last year’s emissions increase mainly to the downturn in demand for diesel cars. The average emissions for diesels continued to be lower than those of their gasoline counterparts.
Though designed in Barcelona, the el-Born will be assembled not in Spain but in Zwickau, Germany, alongside the ID, VW’s first electric car that also will use the MEB platform. The ID comes to market later this year, one year before the el-Born.
