Lexus designers positively nailed the interior of the GS 450h hybrid sedan, blending together topnotch materials and high-tech features into a cabin that suavely states luxury and earns a Ward’s 10 Best Interiors trophy.
While there is plenty to impress, most WardsAuto judges take notice of the authentic bamboo adorning the doors, center console, steering wheel and instrument panel.
The light-colored satin-finished bamboo not only reinforces the vehicle’s eco-smart image but also looks natural in the sunlight, creating a warm contrast with dark leather seats and subtle chrome trim pieces.
“Love the bamboo, rich black (leather) and tasteful metallic accents,” one judge comments on his scoresheet.
Interior designers didn’t shortchange other materials, either. The perforated leather seats are supple yet supportive, especially in the broad shoulders. White stitching breaks up the expanse of black leather and high-quality trim pieces throughout the interior.
It doesn’t take long to see how designers lavished attention on the GS 450h’s smallest details in executing first-rate fit-and-finish. One example is the analog clock, carved from a single ingot of aluminum for a smooth, consistent look. Another is the aluminum sillplate emblazoned with the Lexus logo.
The entire interior is well put together, with minimal gaps between trim pieces. Switchgear is clearly marked, easy to operate and within arm’s reach. Storage space is ample, with a generous area under the center arm rest that easily could gobble up a laptop or iPad.
“Comfort, amenities, controls and driver info are top-shelf,” another judge writes. “My favorite thus far.”
Navigating driver and vehicle information takes a bit of practice, but overall the graphics are excellent and the interface intuitive.
Overall, Lexus designers upped their game with the GS 450h – as they did with the refreshed LS 460L flagship, which also scored well in this year’s Ward’s 10 Best Interiors competition.
Clearly, Toyota’s luxury brand is focused on equaling and in some ways surpassing the interiors of its German rivals.
Finding some of the GS 450h’s stylistic elements on other Lexus models in the future is sure to surprise and delight.
