Hyundai, EGR Transform Veloster Into SEMA Racer

Based on the Hyundai Veloster Turbo and developed with accessory supplier EGR Group, the beefed-up coupe packs a high-output version of the Veloster’s 1.6L 4-cyl. that delivers 250 hp.

Hyundai’s EGR Night Racer concept, headed for a public bow at November’s Specialty Equipment Market Assn. show in Las Vegas, features more than just cosmetic tweaks.

Based on the Hyundai Veloster Turbo and developed with accessory supplier EGR Group, the beefed-up coupe packs a high-output version of the Veloster’s 1.6L 4-cyl. that delivers 250 hp, up from 201 hp for the production model.

Like the 1,000-hp Genesis Coupe show car that also is SEMA-bound, specialist Bisimoto Engineering provided powertrain-tuning expertise for the EGR Night Racer.

The concept also benefits from a “significantly” stiffer body and a race-tuned ARK coil-over suspension with AEM strut brace, oversized Brembo brakes and 3-piece racing wheels.

Designed specifically for night racing, the concept boasts a unique vivid-yellow paint scheme, dubbed Yellowcake, created with PPG and Barry’s Speed Shop. Special headlamps and an LED light bar complete the exterior package.

The concept is meant to show off the Veloster’s potential as a tuning platform.

“EGR created a very special night-focused time attack car that perfectly showcases Veloster Turbo’s inherently sporty DNA,” says Mike O’Brien, vice president-product planning at Hyundai Motor America.
