Mustang Interest Topping Expectations at Ford Australia

Due to hit the market next year, the new model marks the first time the venerable pony car will be available in right-hand drive.

Ford Australia admits it underestimated demand for the new right-hand-drive Mustang, with 13,000 Australians expressing interest in the vehicle ahead of its arrival Down Under in mid-2015.

Ford Australia President and CEO Bob Graziano says the Mustang is an iconic vehicle in Australia and is drawing people to Ford well before it arrives there.

“This is the power of Mustang, and something we underestimated as we have many more customers asking to follow the car than we expected this early in the launch,” Graziano says in a statement.

The all-new Mustang is the most advanced version yet of the pony car and the first to be offered in RHD.

Until now Australians only have been able to obtain Mustangs after expensive conversions to meet Australian regulations.

The RHD Mustang, being built in Flat Rock, MI, will be exported to more than 25 markets, including the U.K. and South Africa.

Ford Australia says the arrival of the Mustang will continue the automaker’s product onslaught over the course of 2015 which also will see the debuts of an all-new Mondeo, and Everest CUV and refreshed Focus and Focus ST.

Graeme Whickman, vice president-sales and service, says the Mustang is expected to boost interest throughout Ford Australia’s growing lineup.

“We see around the world that many people are drawn to Ford because of the Mustang, even though they may end up buying another model from us,” he says.  “The Mustang’s arrival is perfect timing for us, because we have been rapidly expanding our lineup and will refresh all of our models the next few years.”
